    National Service Scheme

    Introduction

    National Service Scheme (NSS) was introduced in 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS. The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Very appropriately, the motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU”. An NSS volunteer places the ‘community’ before ‘self’.
    NSS unit has been created by Midnapore City College under Vidyasagar University, in the year 2022. To ensure the mental and personality development of students, this facility can accommodate 100 volunteers along with the regular activities that happen during each session.

    Aims and Objectives

    NSS aims at developing the following qualities/ competencies among the volunteers:

    • To understand the community in which the NSS volunteers work and to understand themselves in relation to their community.
    • To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve themselves in problem-solving exercise.
    • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
    • To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems;
    • To gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
    • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic values;
    • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and
    • To practice national integration and social harmony.

    The NSS Badge Proud to Serve the Nation:

    NSS aims at developing the following qualities/ competencies among the volunteers:

    • All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy.
    • The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours.
    • Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.
    • The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

    Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer

    NSS is a voluntary scheme. At college level the NSS volunteers will be enrolled from the first and second year degree-class and first year post graduate students. NCC cadets will not be allowed to join NSS.

    An NSS volunteer needs to devote a total of 240 hours social service in two years duration. Every year, a NSS volunteer has to devote 20 hrs. of orientation and 100 hrs. of community service. Enrollment in NSS is free. The NSS volunteers on successful completion of the required hours of service are issued a certificate. NSS volunteers can get some weightage during admissions in higher studies and other benefits as decided by the institutions/university.
